1. What Alendronat Orifarm Veckotablett is and what it is used for
Alendronat Orifarm Veckotablett belongs to a group of non-hormonal medicines called bisphosphonates.
Alendronat Orifarm Veckotablett is used to:
-
treat a disease called osteoporosis (brittle bones) which is common in post-menopausal women.
-
reduce the risk of hip and spine fractures.
Alendronat Orifarm Veckotablett slows down the loss of bone that occurs in women after the menopause. At the same time, Alendronat Orifarm Veckotablett helps to rebuild bone and hence reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures) of the hip and spine.
Osteoporosis causes thinning and weakening of the bones. After the menopause, the ovaries stop producing the female sex hormone, oestrogen. As a result, bone loss occurs and bones become weaker. The earlier a woman reaches the menopause, the greater the risk of osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is an insidious disease that usually has no symptoms. If left untreated, osteoporosis can result in fractures (broken bones), usually of the hip, spine and wrists. Although these usually hurt, breaks in the bones of the spine may go unnoticed until they cause height loss. Fractures can easily arise during everyday activity, e.g. lifting heavy objects. Incidents that normally do not result in injury e.g. a fall, can also cause fractures in patients with osteoporosis.
