WHAT Kaliumjodid RPH Pharma IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR
Iodine tablets are intended for use by the population near a nuclear reactor in case radioactive iodine would be released into the air in the event of a nuclear power accident. The tablets are used as a prophylactic treatment against the effects on the thyroid gland.
In case of a nuclear reactor accident a message regarding the use of iodine tablets is sent on the radio.
The tablets do not protect against any other type of radiation from radioactive substances.
The uptake of radioactive iodine in the thyroid gland can be blocked by rapid administration of a high dose of potassium iodide. The thyroid gland has then has already absorbed enough iodine and no more radioactive iodine is taken up. The risk of thyroid gland cancer after exposure to radioactive iodine is greater in young than in older individuals. Generally foetuses from week 12, newborn and children belong to the most sensitive groups since the thyroid gland in young individuals is still growing.

Children 3-12 years: 1 tablet

The tablet can be chewed or swallowed whole. For newborn babies the dose can be crushed and dispersed in water, lemonade or similar. In case of continuing radioactive exposure a new dose could be taken within 2 days. The competent authorities will give information regarding this.
